Malfy con Limone – Review

Intro

Malfy con Limone was a premium gin I discovered early in my journey. Recommended by a friend as one of their favourites I was keen to try it. It did not disappoint! The Malfy distillery is in Moncalieri, near Torino and is ran by the Vergnano family. Malfy have G.Q.D.I. stamped on all their bottles. This guarantees both origin and quality in a similar way you would find on wine D.O.C or A.O.C on wines from Spain or France.

Bottle

The bottle is bright, fresh and colourful. A unique shape with lovely curves and detail and embossed with Italy and G.Q.DI. The large yellow disks evoking thoughts of that citrus punch and both the blue detail and the logo in the centre of the label hinting at the coastal influence. I couldn’t wait to get started.

Botanicals

As the name would suggest, Lemon is a big flavour in this gin which uses lemons both from the Amalfi coast and Sicily. Italian juniper, Angelica, coriander and cassia bark are also in there.

Method

Malfy use a stainless-steel vacuum for distilling which they believe protects the fresh aromas of the Juniper and lemons. A little different from many of our UK gins which are frequently copper distilled.

Nose

When popping off the stopper for the first time the lemon aromas punch you right on the nose. Pleasingly I don’t feel it overpowers the juniper either which happens with some flavoured gins. Like the bottle on the eyes it is bright and fresh on the nose.

Malfy say “The birthplace of gin – distilled by the Vergnano Family, a sip of MALFY™ Gin captures the perfect gin moment: sitting on a sunny terrace, enjoying the view, “Dolce far niente”, the sweet art of doing nothing…

I don’t disagree. If you close your eyes and take a good nose at it you could almost picture the sunny coastline of Italy.

Taste

Malfy con Limone is beautifully fresh and citrusy. It is smooth and elegant to the taste. This most definitely makes my top 5 gins.

Serve

It is smooth enough to enjoy neat over ice, with tonic or in a cocktail. Its great with a traditional premium Indian tonic but I personally love it with Mediterranean tonic and a lemon wheel.

Twist

Malfy have some great cocktail serves on their website. You can visit them at www.malfygin.com/cocktails to see what they have on offer.

For pancake day recently the guys over at https://thegintomytonic.com/ posted a wonderful recipe for G&T pancakes with a syrup made from Malfy con Limone. I had a go at making it myself and it was delicious! Check them out and remember pancakes are not just for pancake day!
